Quick Answer: What Is 1J46?

1J46 (46Ni-Fe Permalloy) is a nickel-iron soft magnetic alloy with approximately 46% nickel that delivers a high saturation flux density (Bs >=1.5 T) combined with moderate-high initial permeability (ui >=2.5 mH/m), positioned between low-nickel alloys (for saturation) and high-nickel alloys (for sensitivity). It is widely used for small power transformers, relay cores, and magnetic shielding where good magnetic performance at moderate cost is required. Shanghai Hangbo Alloy Group supplies 1J46 as cold-rolled strip, round bar, and plate with GB/T 14985 certification.

Key Properties

Property Value
Density 8.20 g/cm3
Curie Temperature ~430C
Saturation Bs >= 1.50 T
Max Permeability um >= 12.5 mH/m (typical 20k-40k)
Coercivity Hc <= 24 A/m
Electrical Resistivity ~0.50 micro-ohm-m
Key Standards GB/T 14985

Product Overview

1J46 is the entry-level Permalloy grade. With 46% nickel, it has a higher saturation flux density than 1J50 (Bs >=1.50T vs ~1.55T for 1J50 in practice), but at a lower nickel cost. Its permeability (mu-max ~20,000-40,000) is sufficient for the majority of small-signal transformer and relay applications where the extreme sensitivity of 1J79 or 1J85 is not required.

The 46% nickel content represents the composition where the Curie temperature is maximized (for Ni-Fe binary alloys above 30% Ni) while magnetostriction remains relatively low. This gives 1J46 good thermal stability -- retaining its magnetic properties with less sensitivity to operating temperature fluctuations than pure nickel or iron.

Heat Treatment

Hydrogen Annealing: 1050-1150C, 2-4 hour soak, slow cool 100-200C/h through magnetic ordering zone. Dry H2 atmosphere (dew point <=-40C). Like all Permalloys, final magnetic properties are achieved ONLY after this anneal.

Shielding Moderate-sensitivity magnetic shields
Sensors Hall-effect sensor flux concentrators

FAQ

Q1: 1J46 vs 1J50? 1J46 has slightly lower nickel (46% vs 50%) and modestly lower permeability, but sufficient for most general applications where cost is a factor. 1J50 is the premium general-purpose grade.

Q2: Price? $20-35/kg EXW. Contact sales@hangboalloy.com.

Q3: Forms? Cold-rolled strip (0.1-2.5mm), hot-rolled bar (6-100mm), plate. SGS available.
