Quick Answer: How Do You Weld Hastelloy C-276 Without Cracks?

Hastelloy C-276 (UNS N10276) is weldable by GTAW, GMAW, and SMAW using ERNiCrMo-4 filler (AWS A5.14) with three critical rules: (1) keep interpass below 93C, (2) limit heat input to 1.0-2.0 kJ/mm, (3) use stringer beads — never weave. These rules prevent the molybdenum-rich microsegregation in the HAZ that causes microfissuring. Post-weld heat treatment is NOT required for C-276 — it is used in the as-welded condition. Why C-276 Cracks If You Weave

C-276's high molybdenum (16%) segregates at the dendrite boundaries of wide weaved beads, forming low-melting Mo-rich eutectics that microfissure under solidification stress. Stringer beads with low heat input minimize this segregation. This is THE most common field failure in C-276 fabrication.

Heat Treatment (If Ever Required)

C-276 is used as-welded. If the customer insists on PWHT (rare), use solution anneal at 1121C / rapid cool — never stress-relieve in the 649-760C range (precipitates sigma and mu phases, destroying corrosion resistance).
