Quick Answer: What Is PH13-8Mo?
PH13-8Mo (UNS S13800 / W.Nr. 1.4534) is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel with 13% Cr, 8% Ni, and 2% Mo that delivers a unique combination of high strength (up to 1517 MPa in H950 condition), excellent fracture toughness, and corrosion resistance superior to 17-4PH -- making it the reference alloy for aerospace fasteners, landing gear components, and nuclear reactor internals. Shanghai Hangbo Alloy Group supplies PH13-8Mo as round bars and forgings with AMS 5629/5934 certification.

Product Overview
PH13-8Mo represents the "premium upgrade" path from the widely-used 17-4PH (UNS S17400). While 17-4PH relies on copper precipitation for hardening (which can reduce toughness at peak strength), PH13-8Mo uses a more sophisticated NiAl-based precipitation system that provides superior fracture toughness at equivalent strength levels.
The alloy's strengthening mechanism is martensitic transformation followed by precipitation of ordered NiAl (beta-prime) particles during aging. The low carbon content (<=0.05%) and the absence of delta-ferrite stringers in the VIM/VAR double-melted structure result in excellent transverse ductility and impact toughness -- properties essential for aerospace structural components where triaxial stress states demand isotropic mechanical behavior.
Advantages over 17-4PH:
- Higher fracture toughness at equivalent strength.
- Better resistance to stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) in marine environments.
- No copper, eliminating copper-induced hot shortness during forging.
- Finer, more uniform precipitate distribution enabling larger section sizes with uniform properties.

Mechanical Properties by Heat Treatment Condition
| Condition | Tensile (MPa) | Yield (MPa) | Elongation (%) | Hardness (HRC) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H950 (Aged 510C) | >= 1517 | >= 1448 | >= 8 | 45-50 |
| H1000 (Aged 538C) | >= 1413 | >= 1310 | >= 10 | 43-47 |
| H1050 (Aged 566C) | >= 1241 | >= 1138 | >= 12 | 39-43 |
| H1100 (Aged 593C) | >= 1034 | >= 931 | >= 14 | 34-38 |
Heat Treatment
Solution Treatment: 927+/-14C (1700+/-25F), hold 1 hour, oil quench or air cool to below 16C (60F) for complete martensitic transformation.
Aging: Per the H-condition table above. Higher aging temperature = lower strength + higher toughness + better SCC resistance. H1000 is the standard balanced condition for aerospace fasteners.
Applications
| Industry | Component |
|---|---|
| Aerospace | Wing attachment fasteners, landing gear actuator parts, structural pins |
| Nuclear | Reactor internal bolts, core support structures |
| Oil & Gas | High-strength corrosion-resistant fasteners, valve stems |
| Marine | Propeller shafts, pump shafts |
FAQ
Q1: PH13-8Mo vs 17-4PH? PH13-8Mo has higher fracture toughness, better SCC resistance, and no copper. 17-4PH is more widely available and lower cost.
Q2: Is it magnetic? Yes, martensitic structure -- ferromagnetic.
Q3: Weldable? Yes, with matching filler. Post-weld solution treat + age required.
Q4: Price? $25-45/kg EXW. Contact sales@hangboalloy.com.
Q5: Forms? Round bars (6-300 mm), forgings, wire. AMS 5629/5934 certification. SGS available.
