Detailed Introduction to Hastelloy C-4
Hastelloy C-4 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy recognized for its exceptional resistance to corrosion, particularly in extreme environments. It is designed to withstand a variety of corrosive media, including both reducing and oxidizing conditions, making it suitable for a wide range of chemical processing applications.
Hastelloy C-4's alloy composition provides superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking and localized corrosion, such as pitting and crevice corrosion. It also demonstrates excellent weldability and fabricability, allowing it to be easily formed into different shapes and structures, which enhances its versatility in industrial applications.
Equivalent Grades by Country:
• ASTM: UNS N06455
• DIN: NiCrMo-4 W.Nr.2.4610
Overview
Hastelloy C-4 (UNS N06455) is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy designed for outstanding thermal stability and corrosion resistance in the as-welded condition. With low carbon, iron and titanium limits, C-4 minimizes the precipitation of grain-boundary carbides and intermetallic phases during welding and high-temperature exposure, which eliminates the need for post-weld heat treatment in most services. It offers excellent resistance to stress-corrosion cracking, pitting and crevice corrosion in both oxidizing and reducing media, and retains its toughness over a wide temperature range. Hangbo supplies C-4 as round bar (ASTM B574), plate, sheet and strip (ASTM B575), seamless pipe and tube (ASTM B622), and welded pipe and tube (ASTM B619/B626), with each heat certified to the applicable ASTM requirements.

Mechanical Properties (ASTM B574/B575)
Room-temperature mechanical properties (minimum values) of solution-annealed Hastelloy C-4 (UNS N06455):
| Property | Minimum Value |
|---|---|
| Tensile Strength | 690 MPa (100 ksi) |
| Yield Strength (0.2% offset) | 283 MPa (41 ksi) |
Applications
Hastelloy C-4 is widely used in chemical processing, petrochemical and pharmaceutical plants for reactors, heat exchangers, evaporators, piping and storage vessels handling hot contaminated mineral acids, solvents, chlorine and chlorinated organics. Its thermal stability makes it particularly suitable for welded fabrications such as scrubbers, ducting and expansion joints in flue gas desulfurization systems and incineration plants. The alloy also serves in the production of pesticides, herbicides and chemical intermediates where reducing and oxidizing corrosive conditions alternate, as well as in pulp and paper bleaching equipment and components for acetic acid and formic acid service.
