Titanium Grade 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) (UNS R56401) is the extra-low interstitial (ELI) version of the world's most widely used titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V. Controlled reductions of the interstitial elements oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and iron give Grade 23 superior fracture toughness, ductility and fatigue crack growth resistance compared with standard Grade 5, while maintaining essentially the same strength levels. It is manufactured to ASTM F136 (Standard Specification for Wrought Titanium-6Aluminum-4Vanadium ELI Alloy for Surgical Implant Applications) and is the benchmark material for surgical implant devices worldwide.

Overview

Ti-6Al-4V ELI combines high specific strength, excellent corrosion resistance, good fatigue behavior and outstanding biocompatibility, which is why it dominates both the medical implant market and demanding aerospace programs. The ELI composition improves resistance to crack propagation and preserves toughness at cryogenic temperatures, enabling use in aerospace components operating down to -196°C. The alloy responds well to heat treatment and thermomechanical processing, is readily machinable and weldable, and is available in bar, billet, sheet, plate, tube and wire forms with consistent, certified properties.

Applications

Grade 23 ELI is the standard material for surgical implants, including orthopedic prostheses (hip and knee joints), spinal fixation systems, bone screws, plates, intramedullary nails and dental implants. In high-toughness aerospace applications it is used for airframe structural components, fasteners, hydraulic tubing, pressure vessels and cryogenic tankage, where a combination of high strength, damage tolerance and low temperature toughness is essential.
