Titanium Gr15 (UNS R53415) Supplier | Bar, Tube, Plate - Hangbo Alloy

Shanghai Hangbo Alloy Group Co., Ltd. is an ISO 9001:2015 certified manufacturer and global supplier of premium Titanium Grade 15 (Ti-0.5Ni-0.05Pd, UNS R53415) round bars, welded and seamless tubes, plates, sheets, strips and forgings. The nickel + palladium micro-alloying transforms the corrosion profile of commercially pure titanium — delivering exceptional resistance to hot reducing acids and crevice corrosion — while keeping the weight, weldability and biocompatibility of pure titanium. Grade 15 is the specialist choice for chemical processing, desalination and marine heat-exchanger service.

Depth Characteristics

  1. Reducing-Acid Specialist: The 0.5% Ni + 0.05% Pd couple cathodically polarizes the passive film, giving outstanding resistance to hot dilute hydrochloric, sulfuric and phosphoric acids — far beyond CP grades.
  2. Crevice-Corrosion Killer: Grade 15 resists crevice and pitting attack in hot chloride service (seawater, brine, bleach) where Grade 2 crevice-corrodes.
  3. Fully Weldable: Retains the excellent weldability of pure titanium; matching filler can be produced from parent material, with no post-weld heat treatment required.
  4. Light & Strong Enough: Density 4.51 g/cm³ with 70 ksi minimum tensile — ideal for weight-sensitive process piping and tube bundles.
  5. Biocompatible: Ni and Pd levels are within accepted limits for surgical instrumentation and implant-adjacent hardware; the passive TiO₂ film keeps the surface inert.
  6. Proven in Marine Heat Exchangers: Decades of service in seawater-cooled condensers and MSF desalination plants confirm long-term immunity to chloride attack.

Manufacturing Process — Sponge Selection, VAR / EB Melting

Gr15 starts with low-interstitial Kroll-process titanium sponge, selected for minimal chloride and oxygen residuals to protect the tight 0.25% O max. High-purity Ni and Pd master alloys are blended and compacted with the sponge, then melted 1–2 times in a Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) furnace, with an optional Electron Beam Cold Hearth (EBCHM) pass for critical heat-exchanger tube stock. The homogeneous ingots are forged and hot-rolled, then annealed at 650–760°C to restore full ductility and corrosion resistance. Welded tube is TIG/GTAW seam-welded in inert atmosphere, annealed and 100% non-destructively tested.

Testing & Inspection — PMI / UT

  • PMI (Positive Material Identification): 100% XRF / arc-OES verification of Ni and Pd content on all delivered material — critical because the alloying levels are only ~0.5%.
  • UT (Ultrasonic Testing): Full-length ultrasonic examination of bar and billet (ASTM E2375 / E213) and plate (ASTM E114) for internal soundness.
  • Corrosion Verification: Optional boiling-acid and crevice-corrosion tests to prove reducing-acid and chloride performance.
  • Mechanical & Dimensional: Tensile (ASTM E8), hardness, flattening/expansion tests on tube, eddy-current (ASTM E426) and full dimensional checks.
  • EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 certificates and third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TÜV) available.

Application Scenarios — Chemical / Marine / Medical

  • Chemical Processing: Heat-exchanger tubes, reactors, pump and valve trim handling hot dilute HCl, H₂SO₄ and phosphoric acid streams.
  • Desalination & Marine: MSF/RO desalination evaporators, seawater-cooled condensers, brine heaters and offshore seawater piping where crevice corrosion must be eliminated.
  • Pulp & Paper / Bleach Plants: Chlorine dioxide and hypochlorite service with pitting resistance superior to stainless and CP titanium.
  • Pharmaceutical & Food: High-purity reactors and piping where the inert TiO₂ surface prevents product contamination.
  • Medical Devices: Surgical instruments and implant-adjacent hardware requiring biocompatible, crevice-immune titanium.

7+ Professional FAQs

1. What is the UNS number of Titanium Grade 15?
Titanium Grade 15 (Ti-0.5Ni-0.05Pd) is UNS R53415, specified under ASTM B265 (sheet/plate), B348 (bar/billet), B367 (castings) and B381 (forgings).

2. How is Gr15 different from Gr7 (Ti-0.15Pd)?
Both use noble-metal alloying to defeat crevice corrosion. Gr15 pairs 0.5% Ni with 0.05% Pd, giving superior performance in hot reducing acids; Gr7 relies on 0.15% Pd alone and is preferred in some oxidizing media. Gr15 is generally more cost-effective for acid chloride service.

3. Can Gr15 be welded?
Yes — it welds like CP titanium by TIG/GTAW, plasma or laser under inert shielding, with no post-weld heat treatment required.

4. What service temperature is Gr15 rated for?
For corrosion service, continuous operation to ~315°C (600°F) is typical; above this, oxidation begins to govern design.

5. Is Gr15 resistant to seawater?
Excellent — the Pd addition suppresses crevice corrosion in hot seawater and brine where Grade 2 would suffer crevice attack at >70°C.

6. Which melting routes are used?
Single or double VAR melting with optional EBCHM refining; each heat is chemistrized for Ni and Pd before release.

7. What forms does Hangbo supply in Gr15?
Welded and seamless tube, pipe, plate, sheet, round bar and forgings, with PMI-verified Ni/Pd chemistry and full EN 10204 documentation.

8. Does Gr15 cost much more than Grade 2?
The palladium addition adds cost, but for crevice-prone acid/chloride service it eliminates premature failures and expensive re-tubing — the lowest life-cycle-cost option in that duty.
