1. Introduction to XM-19

Description: XM-19 (UNS S20910, also known as Nitronic 50) is a high-performance nitrogen-strengthened super austenitic stainless steel, mainly composed of chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and nitrogen. It features a fully austenitic structure (no ferrite phase), integrating excellent corrosion resistance (especially to chloride pitting/crevice corrosion) and good mechanical properties. It exhibits outstanding resistance to high-temperature oxidation and chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC), stable performance in the temperature range of -270°C to 540°C, and high tensile strength (≥690 MPa). These characteristics make it ideal for ultra-harsh environments with high-concentration corrosive media (e.g., high-temperature chloride solutions) and high-temperature service requirements.

Overview

XM-19 (UNS S20910), also known as Nitronic 50, is a nitrogen-strengthened austenitic stainless steel with a fully austenitic, essentially ferrite-free microstructure. The combination of chromium 20.5–23.5%, nickel 11.5–13.5%, manganese 4–6%, molybdenum 1.5–3% and nitrogen 0.2–0.4% produces approximately twice the yield strength of 316L stainless steel while retaining excellent toughness and corrosion resistance. XM-19 offers outstanding resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion and stress-corrosion cracking, together with high fatigue strength, and remains metallurgically stable from cryogenic temperatures down to -270°C up to 540°C. Hangbo supplies XM-19 as round bar (ASTM A276 / ASTM A479), plate, seamless and welded tube, and forgings with full material certification.

Chemical Composition (ASTM A276/A479)

Chemical composition (wt%) of XM-19 (UNS S20910) per ASTM A276 and ASTM A479 (round bar):

Element Composition (%)
Chromium (Cr) 20.5 – 23.5
Nickel (Ni) 11.5 – 13.5
Manganese (Mn) 4.0 – 6.0
Molybdenum (Mo) 1.5 – 3.0
Nitrogen (N) 0.20 – 0.40

Mechanical Properties (ASTM A276/A479)

Room-temperature mechanical properties (minimum values) of solution-annealed XM-19 (UNS S20910):

Property Minimum Value
Tensile Strength 690 MPa (100 ksi)
Yield Strength (0.2% offset) 380 MPa (55 ksi)

Applications

XM-19 is used in pump shafts, valve stems, fasteners, valve bodies and impellers in seawater, pulp and paper, and chemical processing service where high strength and corrosion resistance are required simultaneously. It is a proven material for power plant feedwater heaters, boiler feed pump shafts, and marine propeller shafts and fasteners. The alloy also serves in oil and gas production equipment, including wellhead components and control valves in sour environments, and in food processing and brewery equipment requiring hygienic, high-strength stainless steel. Its cryogenic toughness enables use in LNG handling and low-temperature storage systems.

Production Process

Our material is manufactured using VIM (Vacuum Induction Melting) + VAR (Vacuum Arc Remelting) or ESR (Electroslag Refining) processes to ensure ultra-high purity and metallurgical integrity. The material undergoes precision machining and rigorous heat treatment (Solution Annealing/Aging) to achieve the specified mechanical properties and grain size consistency.

Testing & Inspection

To guarantee zero-defect delivery, all batches undergo comprehensive testing:

  • UT/PT Flaw Detection: Ultrasonic and Penetrant testing to identify surface and internal defects.
  • Mechanical Testing: High and low temperature tensile testing, impact testing, and hardness verification.
  • Corrosion Testing: Intergranular corrosion tests and pitting resistance verification according to ASTM standards.

Quality Control

We implement a total quality management system with full-process traceability from raw material to finished product. All products are manufactured in strict compliance with ASTM, ASME, and AMS standards, accompanied by EN 10204 3.1/3.2 certificates.

Market Pain Points & Solutions

  • Delivery Consistency: We address supply chain delays by maintaining a large inventory of raw billets and semi-finished products, ensuring rapid response times.
  • Extreme Environment Tolerance: Our specialized melting processes ensure that our alloys maintain structural stability in highly corrosive and high-pressure environments where standard materials fail.

Deep Application Insights

  • Petrochemical: Used in flare stacks and flare tips where resistance to high temperatures and sour gas corrosion is critical.
  • Nuclear Power: Applied in reactor core components and control rod mechanisms due to its excellent radiation resistance and mechanical stability.
  • Aerospace: Found in engine exhaust systems and turbine shroud rings where high fatigue strength and oxidation resistance are required.
